Target is running a restricted pilot of self-checkout in order to determine if the approach can help shorten customer wait times at full-service cashier lines.

The test, being conducted at a few stores, is avaible to shoppers with 10 or less items, according to a CNN report. The goal is also to get a deeper understanding of what shoppers want when it comes to check out experiences."Our guests tell us they enjoy interacting with our team," John Mulligan, chief operating officer at Target, told analysts in a recent call, according to CNN.

The news comes as a time when retailers that had fully embraced the self-checkoutoption are now stepping back or pulling out the technology completely.

As RetailCustomerExperience reported in mid November, Booths, a U.K. grocery chain, decided to replace its self-checkout kiosks with human cashiers in all but two of its 28 stores. A recent feature in The Atlantic reported retail self-checkout has largely been a failure.
