Once upon a time Thanksgiving was celebrated not only for a bountiful spread on the table but as the kickoff time for the infamous Black Friday sales at nearly every store.
Over the decades that scenario has changed quite a bit – few consumers, if any, are bundling up after the big meal to head to the mall and get in line for very early Black Friday specials – specials retailers would kick off late Thanksgiving night and very early in the morning on the following Friday.
But well before the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 more than a few retailers began closing their doors on the fall holiday, which takes place Nov. 23 this year, citing the need for employees to spend the holiday with family.
This year the list features many a top brand:
Target
Walmart
Costco
Dick's Sporting Goods
Belk
Macy's
The Home Depot
Lowe's
TJ Maxx
Marshall's
HomeGoods
Ikea
Victoria's Secret
Office Depot
OfficeMax
Staples
PetSmart
The great news for consumers and shoppers looking to browse and buy on Thanksgiving is that every online retail store, including those run by those brands, as well as pure e-commerce retailers such as Wayfair will be open.
