Walmart is deploying a significant change to its self-checkout systems with the installation of bright yellow rims around PIN pads, according to a New York Post report.
The move is in response to a rise in card skimming incidents at some locations. The yellow rims are designed to protect both the PIN pad and the card terminal from attachment of skimmers. Skimmers are sophisticated devices that criminals disguise to appear as a legitimate part of the payment terminal.
Previously, in an attempt to address the issue of card skimming, some Walmart locations had gone as far as removing self-checkout lanes entirely.
